Love Them or Hate Them, The Guard is Changing

By Ray Cardello for July 12, 2026, Season 32 / Post 18

We accept the constant change in the look of Washington politics. We know that our President changes every 4 or 8 years, and the Justices seem to hang around forever, but the Congress is very fluid. Of course, we have some that stay well beyond their expiration dates, like Pelosi or McConnell. And there are even some who leave too soon. Jared Golden falls into this category. Though a Democrat, he is a common-sense, middle-of-the-road guy who will be missed because the current state of affairs in Maine is going so far to the Left that you cannot even see the horizon to the Right. I think Golden sees he has no place in the new Democrat Party.

The sudden death of Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) underscores how fragile the balance of power is and how important every election and vote is to America’s future. We are at many critical crossroads in American politics and, therefore, American life. One is whether we will continue the path of this great experiment or foolishly shift to Socialism. The Indoctrination Department, formerly the Education Department, continues to glorify Socialism without a clear understanding that it does not work and causes death, and widespread poverty in its wake. At the same time, they are teaching our children that this country is a symbol of oppression rather than opportunity. They have poisoned generations of children, and we have the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA).

Another is a transition from a government of professional statesmen (I can hear the groans at that thought) to a younger, poorly educated group, which does not understand our past and has no real plan for tomorrow. I am old enough to remember when our two parties had different opinions on government and how it relates to the people, but there was always discussion, debate, and compromise. Votes in the House and Senate were typically close, a far cry from the partisan votes along party lines that we have today. The Squad, along with its support from Bernie Sanders, was our first view of the future many shared. The DSA is the Squad on steroids and does not mince words that they want this country torn down and rebuilt with the Socialist model. They are actually calling for the end of the Presidency and the Senate to be replaced by a committee appointed by the House. Again, they are ignorant of our past, the workings of government, and how America and Capitalism have raised more people out of poverty around the world than any other country in history.

The last is our support of Israel and the Jewish people. The Democrats have always had the Jewish voting bloc in their corner, which makes no sense, especially today. To be a Progressive Democrat, you must denounce Israel as an aggressor in the Middle East, which has actually committed genocide against the Palestinian people. Again, that is their ignorance of reality shining through. Israel remains the only Democratic country in the volatile Middle East and our biggest supporter for decades. We have had differences, but we need Israel as a friend as much as Israel needs us.

These crossroads will determine our future, and in a year when we celebrate our 250th anniversary, our path forward is cloudy. The mid-terms are always about control of Washington, but this year, it may be about whether the United States stays strong for another 250, or if the clock strikes midnight and closes the chapter on the greatest country the world has ever seen.

This is the visual embodiment of Ray Cardello’s sharp, clear-eyed essay. I built it as a single, unflinching crossroads that captures every major thread: the fluid, fragile balance of power (underscored by Graham’s sudden absence and Golden’s exit), the choice between America’s 250-year experiment in ordered liberty and the seductive dead-end of socialism/DSA radicalism, the poisoning of education, the eroding of common-sense moderation, and the moral clarity of standing with Israel as the Middle East’s lone democracy.

The fork is deliberate and non-negotiable — one path still leads to the light of opportunity and founding principles; the other already darkens toward midnight. The figure at the center isn’t a partisan caricature; he’s the vanishing moderate Ray mourns. No slogans, no cheap propaganda — just the weight of the moment. America is deciding, right now, whether the clock keeps ticking or strikes twelve. This image doesn’t preach; it simply shows the fork that every voter will stand on in the midterms.
