Today’s article may not be a very popular position with some, and to others, I may come across as heartless, but enough already with the 24/7 news coverage of the missing Nancy Guthrie. Nancy disappeared from her Arizona home nearly two weeks ago, and after all of this coverage, we still know little of the facts. This situation is a sad story, and our hearts go out to the Guthrie family, but if Nancy’s last name were anything other than Guthrie, there is a good chance you never would have heard about her abduction.
Approximately 500,000 to 600,000 people are reported missing annually in the United States. While the vast majority are located quickly, thousands of cases remain unresolved; as of late 2024, over 20,000 missing person cases were still open. Out of respect for these 20,000, can we bring Jonathan Hunt home to cover some real news? He has been standing in front of Nancy Guthrie’s home for nearly two weeks, and the blockbuster news he had for viewers yesterday was that local law enforcement was seen looking in bushes around the Guthrie property, but we do not know what they were looking for. Wow, stay tuned for updates.
This coverage is a good example of media self-importance and what happens when you make the decision to elevate a news story because of who is involved rather than the significance of the event. As soon as media outlets like FOX NEWS decided this story was worth the first 30 minutes of every block throughout the day, they were trapped. If they pulled the plug on the story now, they admitted the last 11 days of coverage were a very bad decision and a tremendous waste of resources. So, to save face, Brett, Laura, Jessie, and even Sean will try to come up with intelligent questions to fill the time. It’s not working, and those of us who tune in for the news of the day that impacts us directly are disappointed. I find myself recording my favorite shows and fast-forwarding to the 30-minute mark to get a taste of whatever else is happening in the world.
The people who are thrilled about this coverage are Tim Walz, Jacob Frey, Ilhan Omar, and even Janet Mills, of Maine. These folks have been bumped from the front page, and little is now being reported about the widespread fraud and corruption in Minnesota and Maine. It is impossible to say how long this drama will continue to dominate the airwaves, and we are all pulling for Nancy Guthrie to return home safely, just as we do for the other 20,000 whose relatives are hoping every day for some good news on their loved one’s whereabouts.
It is time for Nancy’s story to drop below the fold. That does not mean she is not important. It means that every Sue Smith in the world is just as important. Let’s get on with the impactful stories of the day, like the Clinton’s refusing to testify before Congress, or the Olympic skier making a fool of himself, while taking shots at the country that has put him in the spotlight. Or the three musketeers from California: Schiff, Newsom, and Swalwell, who put their foot in their mouth every time they spot a microphone.
