Blowing Up the Filibuster Would Be a Huge Win for Democrats

By Ray Cardello for November 2, 2025, Season 33 / Post 11

Everyone except the Democrats is frustrated by the Senate impasse that is keeping our government shut down. This situation is not one where negotiation will lead to a resolution. This is a situation where the Democrats are holding pay and benefits from the American people in the hopes that the pain will force the Republicans to give in to the unreasonable demands of the Party on the Left, now the far Left. The Radicals are demanding healthcare benefits for Americans, except they are misrepresenting who is an American. When they address the media, and the media echoes their demands, it sounds like the Republicans have cut off paid healthcare for American citizens. The truth is, and that is always painful to the Left, the people whom the Radicals want paid coverage for are illegal aliens that the Biden administration awarded special consideration for. They are not American citizens, and tax dollars should not be used to give this group of aliens paid healthcare benefits, period, end of story. The Radicals are also demanding a reinstatement of unneeded and wasteful programs cut by Elon Musk and the DOGE investigators. The demands are not worthy of negotiation, and thus, we are looking at a long and painful shutdown going into the holiday season.

Ordinarily, a government shutdown is not painful, and in some cases, it benefits most Americans to have the government out of business and not spending money in the short term. In this case, however, the length of the shutdown is having an unwarranted and adverse impact on essential services and areas, including our military, air traffic control, the TSA, and SNAP food programs, as funds for these areas have been frozen. We cannot expect our national and flight safety to be protected by people who are not being paid for their services. Unfortunately, it has been discovered that 42 million people —one in eight Americans — are relying on the government to feed them. The Left has gone to court and found liberal, Obama-appointed judges in Massachusetts and Rhode Island to force the government to fund specific programs, like SNAP, with money it does not have. Trump has proposed a solution to the shutdown, but it will have grave consequences down the road.

Trump has suggested blowing up the Senate filibuster, which requires 60 votes, and passing the CR bill to reopen the government by a simple majority. This sounds good until you look to the future and how the Democrats will take advantage of the simple majority rule. Harry Reid blew up the filibuster years ago when it came to the Senate voting on Supreme Court appointments. This change is why we have to deal with the likes of the inept Ketanji Onyika Brown Jackson on the Supreme Court for life. She never would have been appointed if the filibuster were in place. The Democrats must be salivating at the prospect of the filibuster being retired and a simple majority required to pass a bill through the Senate if they regain the majority.

The disolving of the filibuster will pave the way for a Democrat-controlled Senate to pass bills to make Washington, D.C., the 51st state. They will make all illegal aliens eligible for paid healthcare and give them voting rights in all elections. They will change the legal voting age to 16. They may even try to do away with the Electoral College. None of these proposals is good for America, but they are great for the Democratic Party, and that is what Democrats are most concerned with.

I appreciate President Trump proposing a viable end to the shutdown, but not if that proposal will have such an adverse impact in the future. America cannot trust the Democrats with doing the right thing for our future, and we must maintain what little control we have over their reckless thinking. Keep the filibuster in place, and let’s deal with the pain until the Democrats are forced to end their foolish shutdown, and hopefully, we see an end to this Socialist movement infecting America.
