If You Know Them, You Can Still Condemn Them

By Ray Cardello for February 4, 2022 Season 8 / Post 38

The situation this week with Whoopi Goldberg stepping on her thoughts and words not once but three times in two days. Great productivity for a TV liberal. This race-based moment in time has created a conundrum for many of us. We on the Right believe in free speech even if we think the thoughts to be wrong, lewd, or offensive. For the Left, free speech is only free if you agree with the speaker. For the Right, someone can say what they want. We choose to listen or not. True belief in free speech is why we have a problem with the cancel culture.

There is a perfect example of the dichotomy of how the cancel culture brethren cannot be consistent in their cause. Joe Rogan of the podcast “The Joe Rogan Experience,” has the largest following of any podcast on Spotify or any streaming platform. His podcasts are a conversation between Joe and people of all walks and ilks. That is how we learn and grow. Not for the Left. They want to choose who can and cannot speak. They want Rogan canceled. Drop the mic.

While Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, The Duo of Sussex, and The View are going nuclear on Rogan, one of their own stepped on the third rail. Rogan questioned the science of COVID, but Whoopi diminished the extermination of six million Jews. Whoopi dared to comment on the Holocaust and offend Jews and level-minded people everywhere who had read a history book. What are the folks on the Left going to do now?

Whoopi committed a compound offense. She said something offensive, then went on a late-night talk show to apologize, only to get verbose and sink deeper. Then she comes back to the original scene and apologizes for a second time. ABC’s network had to do something and suspended the host for two weeks. She is bent out of shape and threatens to quit while others say the sentence is too light.

I found the most amazing and ridiculous comment from Mika Brzezinski of Morning Joe on MSNBC. Mica is the bobbing head who sits next to Joe and rarely has an adult moment or comment. On Whoopi, she didn’t fail. “This is Whoopi we are talking about. She didn’t mean any harm. She has been on TV for years. We all know her. This isn’t her.” So being on TV for years is an excuse for insensitive and insulting comments. I wonder if Mica wants to apply her logic to Bill Cosby and what she wants to say to his victims? He was a sex offender for years but he was America’s Dad for being on TV. Innocent, Mika?

The two examples of Whoopi and Rogan show the stark differences between the Left and Right on Free Speech. But it also shows the inconsistency in commitment to their belief on the Left. No one is safe from their Cancel Culture unless it is one of their own. In that case, they will sit back as mute as the ladies on The View as they sat with zipped lips and let Whoopi hang herself. In the end, the Left has just one concern: themselves. Whoever has to be eliminated to ensure self preservation is just collateral damage.
