Did the Greatest Generation Set Us Up for Failure

By Ray Cardello for May 17, 2026, Season 35 / Post 26

I am a firm believer in adults taking responsibility for their actions. Too often, you see the excuse for someone’s improprieties as a difficult childhood or growing up in a one-parent household. How about no, regardless of our foundation, we are adults and should know the difference between right and wrong, between moral and immoral. Years ago, it was the goal of every generation to create a better life for the next, and that philosophy stood up for much of the time. The Greatest Generation, the one that protected and freed the world from the evil desires for domination of the Germans and the Japanese, is credited with so much, including an age of prosperity, opportunities, and independence never seen before. Unfortunately, that generation may have eliminated the need for survival, hard work, and a quest for a sense of belonging to a family, a community, and a nation. We went from people who would drop everything and lay down their lives for a mutual cause to a society of individuals, selfish in their desires and feeling entitled to better, rather than working for it. The cause became self, and the ability to freely think and take personal responsibility was gone. I contend that in the subsequent generations, we have exacerbated that trend and replaced us with me, and setting goals and dreams with a belief that we are simply entitled to what we want and no comprehension that someone will have to work and sacrifice for me, not to work for what I need, but to get what I want. If World War II, or eleven, as some of our ignorant and illiterate congresspeople see it, happened today, the progressive, radical Left would say we deserved it and be content speaking German or Japanese.

I heard some members of the Left, including Kamala Harris, who God forbid was almost our president, say that the Right wants to rewrite history so that our young will not understand what a terribly oppressed and racist country America really is. The truth is that the Left has manipulated what of our history our children will hear so they can shape our past as they see it, not as it was. Though I believe in personal accountability, I do blame the education, or lack thereof, for indoctrinating our children and systematically reshaping the goals of our forefathers into a world reliant on the thoughts of a few. They believe that the wealthy did not earn their prosperity, and we should take it from them to give those who are too lazy to aspire to be better, to have the basic necessities for free.

I love that GROK focused on the passing of the torch in its image for my article, and though I see that torch getting dimmer with each passing, I hold out hope we can reverse the trend and redirect the country. It will take a series of Conservative administrations, with the grit and drive of Trump, to get it done. The alternative is to surrender to the desire of Socialism that the Left is striving for. Forget about history and its evidence that Socialism does not work; they only need to look at Europe of today to see our tomorrow, if they win. But apparently, the cellphones each young person is holding in the image are programmed to show only TikTok videos, not reality.

The Greatest Generation hit the pause button on their lives and picked up arms to fight, and sometimes die for our freedom. Many of today’s generation will grab their cinnamon latte with almond milk and pick up a sign printed by billionaires to protest billionaires. They might never see the lack of wisdom in their feeble efforts. Let’s hope that the May 1st celebrations a couple of weeks ago, when educators pulled children out of the classroom to teach them how to protest, will never repeat itself. They may need a refresher on right versus wrong. We may need the help of a Higher Power to accomplish that goal. The Bible calls people to wisdom, righteousness, justice, mercy, and personal accountability under God — not to align with 21st-century political teams. It judges hearts and actions more than labels. It’s time to drop Left vs Right and return to We the People. I hope that is more than a wish and a dream.
